I’m not saying that it’s boring. Yes, the entire Bible is inspired by God. ![]() This could be because they need to try different methods of memorizing the Bible, but it also could be because they lost the inspiration. I’ve heard too many people who tell me that they “started memorizing but I never got past chapter 2”. Not just the first chapter, but the whole book. That’s why it’s so important that you find a book that engages and inspires you. Keep in mind that unless you have strong internal motivation, you’re probably going to go through that same string of emotions as you memorize a book of the Bible. And you just want to curl up and die by mile 21. …fatigue starts to set in during mile 11. I’ve trained for and run a marathon before, and I know just how it feels when that start gun goes off. Think of Bible memory kind of like a race. Which book or section of the Bible has impacted you? 4. However, because Psalm 46 has had a profound impact on my life and has been used by God to grow me, I’ve committed that Psalm to memory. The idea of memorizing the entire collection of Psalms is ridiculous (at least right now). If this is part of an overwhelmingly long book of the Bible, then perhaps consider memorizing just a chapter or two of that book instead of the whole book, at least to start. If I were you, I would choose a portion of the Bible that has had a great impact on your life (even if it’s just one verse that was impactful). Which Book Has Personally Impacted Me?Įach of us have had different life experiences and have probably had different portions of Scripture impact us in unique ways. There are 5 sections within each of these parts: Old Testament Law History Poetry Major Prophets Minor Prophets New Testament Gospels History Letters from Paul General Letters Prophecy Read 2 Timothy 3:16-17 Discuss 5. I would take a good look at this list and choose a book between 3-5 chapters in length that you feel will be a worthy challenge without being crazy hard. It is organized into two main parts: Old Testament and New Testament. The full breakdown of how many chapters and verses are in each book of the Bible can be found here. Here’s a quick look at the lengths of each New Testament book based on the number of chapters, the number of verses, and the average verse per chapter. Finding something that works for you in the middle is probably good. In the New Testament, the book of Luke is the longest (1151 verses) while the book of 2 John is the shortest (13 verses). The length of the book you decide to memorize can have an impact on how fast you can memorize it as well as how long you can stay motivated to do so! Do you prefer being able to recite the sermons of Paul or the stories of Jesus? 2. I usually tend to create mnemonics for these words that have absolutely no correlation to their meaning.Īgain, this is a decision that you have to make. “righteousness”, “rebuke” or “holiness”). While this isn’t bad, I do find myself struggling at times to find ways to memorize general concepts and words that aren’t part of my daily vocabulary (i.e. Examples of this usually include most of Paul’s letters in the New Testament. On the other hand, I’ve started by memorizing books that are more abstract. It’s a story that we can easily follow that includes dialogue from a number of characters (Jonah, the fishermen, God). For this reason, finding a story in the Bible that includes concrete characters, dialogue and a general plot can sometimes be beneficial.Ī good example of a concrete book would be something like Jonah. Do I Want Abstract or Concrete?Ībstract ideas and concepts are generally harder to memorize than concrete details. Here are the four questions I challenge you to ask when considering which book to commit to memory. However, taking a measured approach to how we memorize the Word of God can help us in a number of ways, including keeping us motivated toward our goals.īefore you really dive into memorizing extended portions of Scripture, it’s important that you take the time to figure out both which Bible translation you’ll memorize as well as which book of the Bible you’ll start with. My way of memorizing is different than Tom Meyer’s method of memorizing the Bible. There is no “right” or “wrong” way to memorize Scripture, let me just make sure we’re clear on that. You may be leery about using your Google account password in the app: It's healthy to be skeptical when a non-official app asks for your password. The unofficial Desktop Player app is the only way for Play Music to replicate a function that Spotify users have enjoyed for years. You need a Chromecast, Nexus Player, or other officially supported device. How is this different from just using Google's mobile app to cast to a local device? Surprisingly, the official app doesn't let you cast to your computer, even if you have Play Music loaded in a Google Chrome browser tab. So your compatible smartwatch can use the app, too. You get music controls, playlists, search, and the ability to play specific songs, plus the app is compatible with Android Wear. Making it a permanent resident of the UI can help alleviate some anxiety about accidentally removing a song from your library, and it's also a better reminder that your trash is automatically emptied after 60 days.Ī free remote player mobile app for Android: As its name implies, Remote for GPMDP is a free Android app that interacts directly with the Desktop Player, over your local Wi-Fi connection. The Trash section exists in the web version of Google Play, but you can't see it unless there's something in it. You can set the Player app to open when you start your computer, enable voice control, use a mini player widget, link the app to a Last.FM account, create keyboard shortcuts for a variety of common actions, and even try out experimental support of 5.1 surround sound. The additional features are welcome and sensible: While the visual design of GPMDP is nearly identical to the web version, you'll notice a few additional items when you click on the hamburger menu in the upper left corner, chiefly "Desktop Settings" and "Trash." Clicking on Desktop Settings opens up a whole new layer of functions and interaction. Its advantages come in what it can add to the experience, rather than attempting to alter what's already working. It doesn't try to reinvent the wheel: Play Music doesn't have a bad interface, so why fix what isn't broken? For the most part, Google Play Music Desktop Player (GPMDP) seeks to mirror the look and feel of the in-browser experience, for maximum familiarity. Have Play Music fans been missing out by not having a Spotify-like desktop experience? Let's investigate. Generally speaking, Google's mobile services come from a kaleidoscope of individual apps, but us lowly Windows and Mac users get corralled into a web browser tab when we want to load up Gmail, Drive, Photos, Maps, and so on. Although Google Play Music (GPM) competes directly against Spotify and other streaming services, it actually doesn't have its own desktop app. ![]() In central Arizona, Mogollon culture shows subtle differences in architecture and artifacts from those of the Anasazi. What the gazetteer says is that Wu wrote something called The Journey to the West. ![]() Brown University Chinese literature scholar David Lattimore states: "The Ambassador's confidence was quite unjustified. Recent scholarship casts doubts on this attribution. He reasoned that the people of Wu's hometown attributed it early on to Wu, and kept records to that effect as early as 1625 thus, claimed Ambassador Hu, Journey to the West was one of the earliest Chinese novels for which the authorship is officially documented. Hu Shih, literary scholar and former Ambassador to the United States, wrote that the novel was thought to have been written and published anonymously by Wu Cheng'en. Yu, writing in 2012, warned that "this vexing dispute over the novel's authorship, similar to that on the priority of its textual versions, see-sawed back and forth for nearly a century without resolution." The question of authorship is further complicated by the fact that a good deal of the novel's material had been published in the form of folk tales. The earliest known full-length version of Journey to the West was published anonymously in 1592, preceded by two briefer versions. The four protagonists, from left to right: Sun Wukong, Tang Sanzang (on the White Dragon Horse), Zhu Bajie, and Sha Wujing Enduringly popular, the novel is at once a comic adventure story, a humorous satire of Chinese bureaucracy, a source of spiritual insight, and an extended allegory. Journey to the West has strong roots in Chinese folk religion, Chinese mythology, Confucianism, Taoist, and Buddhist theology, and the pantheon of Taoist immortals and Buddhist bodhisattvas are still reflective of some Chinese religious attitudes today. The group of pilgrims journeys towards enlightenment by the power and virtue of cooperation. ![]() These disciples are Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Wujing, together with a dragon prince who acts as Tang Sanzang's steed, a white horse. The novel retains the broad outline of Xuanzang's own account, Great Tang Records on the Western Regions, but adds elements from folk tales and the author's invention: Gautama Buddha gives this task to the monk and provides him with three protectors who agree to help him as an atonement for their sins. The monk is referred to as Tang Sanzang in the novel. The novel is an extended account of the legendary pilgrimage of the Tang dynasty Buddhist monk Xuanzang, who traveled to the " Western Regions" ( Central Asia and India) to obtain Buddhist sacred texts ( sūtras) and returned after many trials and much suffering.
